eBay Pulls Leaked 30th Anniversary Cards at TPCi's Request
TPCi Is Guarding the Anniversary Gates
Leaked anniversary product has been floating around social media for weeks, and now the hammer has dropped. eBay has started removing in-hand listings of 30th Anniversary Pokémon TCG cards and merchandise after receiving communication from The Pokémon Company International, pulling the listings under its Stolen Property Policy.
What the Notice Said
Sellers who listed the items early received a notice stating that TPCi indicated "30th Anniversary Pokemon trading cards are not distributed or made available for public sale through authorized channels as of today." eBay is recommending sellers not relist unless they can provide documentation showing the product came from an authorized, legitimate source. Because the items may have originated outside approved manufacturing and distribution processes, eBay is treating them as potentially stolen property.
How the Cards Got Out Early
For the past month or two, openings of 30th Anniversary merchandise have been circulating across social media. Most of the product appears to have entered the secondary market through an unauthorized point somewhere along the distribution chain, such as a distributor or warehouse. The earliest widely shared openings came out of Australia, with product from other countries surfacing later.
A Problem That Started with Shining Fates
Factory thefts and distribution leaks have been a recurring headache for TPCi since the pandemic, beginning with Shining Fates in 2021. TPCi runs an internal task force that works to track down and prevent these leaks, and the eBay removals are the latest move in that effort. Not every platform is cooperating, though. Some marketplaces continue to allow prerelease sales at exorbitant prices, apparently happy to take their cut even when the merchandise entered the market through unauthorized or illegal channels.
The Set Everyone Is Waiting On
The timing here is everything. 30th Celebration releases worldwide on Wednesday, September 16. Every card in the set is foil, right down to the Basic Energy, every booster pack comes with one of 30 Pikachu, and the set brings back 30 classic cards from across the game's history, each carrying a "30" Pikachu stamp and its own foil treatment. That is exactly the kind of set that makes early leaked product so tempting on the secondary market.
