The Anti-Scalper Fight Just Went Biometric
The Pokémon Company is done playing nice with scalpers. In an announcement posted to the official Pokémon Card Game website on July 24, the company confirmed that Japan's official Pokémon Card Store locations will use a facial recognition system to enforce store entry and purchase limits. These are the company's smaller, TCG-focused shops, separate from the bigger Pokémon Center stores, and the new system is aimed squarely at buyers re-entering to beat the limits. That loop just got closed.
One Face, One Ticket, One Visit Per Day
Here is how it works. Anyone who wants to enter must consent to a facial recognition scan, and in exchange they receive a numbered entry ticket. The system checks that each person gets only one entry ticket per day. If it flags someone trying to grab a second ticket or slip back into the store for another run at the shelves, staff will deny entry on the spot. The stated goal is exactly what you would guess: stopping scalpers from circumventing entry and purchase limits by re-entering over and over.
Kids Get a Pass, Groups Get Questions
There is one carve-out: preschoolers are exempt from the facial recognition and may only enter with an adult. Staff also have the green light to question groups of customers if they suspect a team is working together to dodge the entry rules, which targets another classic scalper tactic of splitting purchases across a crew.
What Happens to Your Face Data
According to the announcement, the stores will collect customers' facial image data and visit counts. The Pokémon Company says that information will be stored securely for a certain amount of time in accordance with its privacy policy. Whether this system eventually expands to the larger Pokémon Center locations is still an open question; nothing has been announced on that front yet.
This Is Not the Only ID Check Coming
The face scans are part of a bigger crackdown. Earlier this year, Pokémon Japan announced that starting around August 2026, customers will need to verify their identity with the government-issued My Number Card to enter lotteries and buy select TCG products from Pokémon Center Online, as well as to register for certain official events. The first products designated for that verification requirement are part of the 30th Celebration lineup going on sale in the coming weeks. Between the biometrics at the door and the government ID checks online, both layers now sit between a Japanese shopper and the shelf.
